Food and Health & Safety
Members of the Food and Safety Team will undertake duties as directed to assist the
Council in responding to a Civil Contingency Act emergency or business recovery event.
Following, distressing incidents in a funeral home in Hull and East Riding in 2024 the
Ministry of Justice and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities
requested that as priority local authority Environmental Health Teams carry out visits to
funeral homes in the area. The Food and Safety Team picked up this work although the
additional interventions were not in the workplan. Few o昀케cers had previously inspected
any funeral homes and there was a need for the team to receive appropriate training
to undertake the work in an unfamiliar environment. Visits were made to 32 funeral
directors located within the authority. The visits were undertaken by authorised o昀케cers
in the Food and Safety Team.
All the funeral directors were welcoming and understanding.
Noti昀椀cations of the planned, licenced and non-licenced removal of asbestos from certain
premises are received via the HSE’s Extranet online service. This website allows the
sharing of information across individuals and organisations involved in regulating health
and safety in the UK.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) carried out an audit on shell昀椀sh traceability within the
East Su昀昀olk area in June 2024.
The expected other service demands are shown in appendix 6.
