REVIEW
6.3 Areas of Improvement
Food and Health & Safety
To make the best use of o昀케cers’ time we are introducing the full range of intervention
types outlined in the Food Law Code of Practice. Food intervention and re-active work
is now allocated to O昀케cers in areas. This has been found to be more e昀케cient as it
reduces travelling time and mileage.
Ways of working that were developed during the COVID-19 pandemic have been
reviewed and those that have been shown to be an improvement have been kept
in place. For example, prioritising work according to risk and using the website to
signpost businesses and customers to further guidance and self-help tools.
The Food and Safety Team is continuing to introduce and improve document
automation to improve the clarity and consistency of Food Safety and Hygiene
Intervention Reports and other documentation that is provided to our customers.
We are continuing to add online forms to our website for our customers to use.
Suffolk Coastal Port Health Authority
Su昀昀olk Coastal Port Health Authority’s dedicated IT development team is currently
building NEOMA, the next evolution of the Port Health Interactive Live Information
System, which will replace the existing PHILIS platform. This will use cutting-edge
technology, such as arti昀椀cial intelligence, to increase the e昀케ciency of port health
operations and cut down on waste.
Currently, PHILIS is outsourced to the majority of Britain’s port health authorities, with
ongoing support and maintenance provided by SCPHA’s IT team. Over time, NEOMA is
expected to replace PHILIS in these instances, greatly expanding SCPHA’s IT services.
The requirements of the Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) introduced new or
varied demands on the SCPHA service: a review of SCPHA delivery mechanism and
service structure is anticipated.
Corporate Health and Safety
Corporate Health and Safety Team operates a management process whereby the
Health and Safety Advisors are allocated service areas and will support those teams
and becoming the “go to” person on health and safety matters for the managers in that
department.
The introduction of an apprentice to assist with administration within the team has been
welcomed. Along with general administration task such as minute taking the apprentice
also receives and collates data which is helping to focus the Health and Safety Advisors’
resources where they are needed.
